Welcome to the Arts Society Mid Wales and Borders

"There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't yet met"                                                                                     William Butler Yeats

THE ARTS SOCIETY MID WALES and BORDERS (formerly known as the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies North Powys (NADFAS) was founded in 1976 and is now based at the Royal Oak Hotel in Welshpool.  We are affiliated to the national organisation The Arts Society. Our aims and objects are to present stimulating, authoritative and entertaining lectures and to arrange visits to places of interest, museums and art galleries.  There are study days, organised by our umbrella organisation, that members can join. The majority of our lecturers are accredited by the Arts Society and are international experts in their field.  Members receive its own magazine 'Review' three times a year and we produce our own regular e-mailed Newsletter keeping you up to date with local visits and social events as the season unfolds. We are a very friendly society where, as well as making friends, you have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of many art forms.  We meet monthly on the fourth Thursday at 2.30 p.m. in The Royal Oak Hotel, Welshpool and visitors are most welcome to join us for a suggested voluntary donation of £8.00 per lecture, or give what you feel appropriate as your donation will help us to continue to provide quality lectures in the future.   Our Annual Membership Subscription is £45.00.  As you view our website, do look at our 'Gallery of Curiosities' a unique feature which is an eclectic mix of unusual items and documents submitted by our members for everyone's interest, enjoyment and comment.  We hope you like it. This ancient map displayed on the right is by John Speed, published in 1611, and is a highly detailed and visually appealing map of Montgomeryshire, Wales. It is notable for being one of the first printed maps of the town of Montgomery and features an inset plan of the town, along with coats of arms and a compass rose.   If you enjoy looking at maps of this period, look out for  'The Theatre of Great Britain and Ireland ~ The Counties of Britain", a fascinating record of how each county is documented by John Speed in the 17th century.
